The origins of e-commerce can be traced back to the 1960s when electronic data interchange (EDI) was first introduced as a means of exchanging business documents electronically between companies. However, the modern era of e-commerce began in the mid-1990s when the Internet became more widely available to the public.

One of the earliest examples of e-commerce was the online bookstore, Amazon.com, which was founded in 1994. Shortly after, in 1995, eBay was founded as an online auction platform, and these two companies are often credited with popularizing e-commerce and paving the way for the many online retailers and marketplaces that exist today.
