The origins of ecommerce can be traced back to the 1960s, when organizations began to use electronic data interchange (EDI) to exchange business documents electronically. However, the first true ecommerce transaction is widely believed to have occurred on August 11, 1994, when a man named Phil Brandenberger purchased a CD of Sting’s Ten Summoner’s Tales album from the website NetMarket, which was an online retailer founded by Daniel Kohn and John Quarterman. This marked the beginning of the ecommerce industry as we know it today, and since then, ecommerce has grown rapidly, transforming the way that people shop and do business around the world.
